The upcoming HVAC refrigerant mandate, led by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), will phase out R-410A refrigerant in residential systems starting January 1, 2025. It will be replaced by R-32 as the preferred choice due to its lower global warming potential (GWP). This shift is a significant step in reducing the environmental impact of HVAC systems. Here’s what consumers need to know:

What is R-32 Refrigerant?

R-32 is a more environmentally friendly refrigerant, set to replace R-410A in air conditioning and heat pump systems. With a GWP about one-third of R-410A, R-32 contributes significantly less to global warming, aligning with efforts to combat climate change.

Why the Change?

The transition to R-32 is part of a global initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. R-410A has a much higher GWP, and by moving to R-32, the HVAC industry is taking steps to lower its environmental footprint. Thanks to Daikin, our partner in providing excellent home comfort, we’re currently able to sell the new R-32 units at R410a prices!

What Does This Mean for Consumers?

  1. Increased Costs: The transition will raise costs across all equipment, including furnaces. Since R-32 is slightly flammable (A2L-rated), additional safety features will be needed in new systems or as accessories for older ones.
  2. Product Line Overhaul: Manufacturers are redesigning product lines, including coils, condensers, and furnaces. This will lead to a 9-16% price increase industry-wide. Daikin is ahead in this transition, while other brands are just beginning to roll out R-32 systems.
  3. Efficiency and Environmental Benefits: R-32 systems are more energy-efficient, environmentally friendly, and easier to service.
  4. New Equipment Requirements: New HVAC systems will be R-32 compatible, so if you’re shopping for a new unit, it’s likely to use R-32.
  5. Long-Term Savings: R-32 systems offer better energy efficiency, which could reduce energy bills over time. R-32 is also easier to recycle, providing both environmental and cost benefits.
  6. Phased Transition: While R-32 is becoming the standard, R-410A systems will still be available for a while, giving consumers time to plan upgrades.
  7. Servicing Existing Units: R-410A systems can still be serviced, but costs may rise as R-32 becomes more widespread.
  8. Environmental Benefits: Choosing an R-32 system supports sustainability by reducing global warming potential.

Overview

The R-32 refrigerant mandate is a positive step toward a more sustainable future. Though there will be an adjustment period, the long-term benefits for both consumers and the environment make the change worthwhile. If you’re considering a new HVAC system, R-32 offers improved efficiency, lower environmental impact, and potential savings.
